Chickenpox is an infectious disease produced by a virus called Herpes-Zoster, very common during chilhood.
In Argentina it affects approximately 400,000 children every year.
It is usually benign; though, some complications can appear occasionally, as for example, pneumonitis, hepatitis o encephalitis. These are not frequent but, when they appear they are serious. That is why several years ago the investigation of a protective vaccine started.
Nowadays we have this vaccine in our country, which is 85% to 95% efficient.
The reccomendation for its application is as follows:
- Children up to 12 years = 1 dose.
- Children older than 12 years = 2 doses (with a month interval in between).
Ask your pediatrician.
Concerning your children's health the pediatrician is irreplaceable!!
